Description
This direct positive portrait is made using a large-format camera and silver gelatin paper. The image is captured in-camera – no negative, no digital steps – and developed entirely by hand.
During the live demonstration, the sitter is invited to observe the entire process. After exposure under studio lighting, you’ll enter the darkroom, and under the red safe-light you’ll see your image emerge during development and become safe to view under daylight once fixed.
While the image will be visible during your session, it still requires a full archival wash and drying period to ensure permanence and stability. The final print – a 4×5″ is a mirror image with rich blacks, soft detail, and luminous highlights – will be carefully dried, packaged, and posted to you within 14 days.
The paper’s orthochromatic sensitivity darkens reds and emphasises blues, giving the portrait a tonal quality unique to this process.
